OpenClaw
An open-source personal AI assistant that runs on your machine, connects to your messaging apps, and can actually do things: read files, run commands, browse the web, control smart home devices. It's not a chatbot you visit - it's an agent that lives in your messaging apps and works 24/7.
OpenClaw's gateway architecture sits between AI models and messaging platforms, routing every message through tools and skills before the response reaches you. You bring your own API keys; everything runs on your machine.
Your own Jarvis - an AI agent that lives in your messaging apps and works 24/7.
OpenClaw is a personal AI assistant that runs locally on your machine. It connects to your messaging apps - WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal, iMessage, and 20+ others - and becomes an always-on agent you can talk to from any device. It can read and write files, run shell commands, execute scripts, browse the web, and control smart home devices.
This isn't a chatbot you visit in a browser tab. It's an agent that lives where you already are. Send it a message in WhatsApp to check your server status. Ask it in Telegram to research a topic and save the results to your Obsidian vault. It works in DMs and group chats, and it can even reach out to you proactively with scheduled reports or alerts. OpenClaw is open source - 235K+ GitHub stars - built in TypeScript by Peter Steinberger.
A gateway that connects AI models to messaging apps - with tools in between.
You run openclaw gateway on your machine. It connects to AI models using your own API keys - Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, or local models via Ollama - and to messaging platforms using your own accounts. When a message comes in through WhatsApp or Telegram, the gateway routes it to the appropriate AI model. The model responds, potentially calling tools along the way - browser automation, shell commands, file system operations. The response travels back through the messaging channel. Everything stays on your machine.
The architecture is model-agnostic. You can switch between Claude, GPT, Gemini, or a local Llama model without changing anything on the messaging side. Skills extend what the gateway can do - 100+ community AgentSkills cover everything from GitHub CI/CD automation to controlling Philips Hue lights. The model can even write its own skills after completing a complex task. Cron jobs, webhook triggers, and heartbeat monitoring let it run on a schedule or respond to external events.
Four capabilities that turn a chatbot into an agent.
Messaging Everywhere
29+ platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal, and iMessage. Works in DMs and group chats. Cross-platform continuity - start a conversation on Telegram, pick it up on WhatsApp. Your agent is always reachable from whatever device you're holding.
System Control
Read and write files on your machine. Run shell commands and scripts. Full terminal access. Automate server maintenance, generate reports from log files, manage git repositories - all through a message in your chat app.
Browser Automation
Navigate websites, fill out forms, extract structured data, scrape pages. Research a product across five sites and compile a comparison table. Monitor a flight price and alert you when it drops. Fill and submit expense reports automatically.
Persistent Memory
Remembers your preferences, ongoing projects, and the people in your life across conversations. All stored as local Markdown files you can read, edit, or back up. No vendor cloud holds your data - your memory lives on your disk, in plain text.
100+ community AgentSkills - and the model can write its own.
Skills are the secret to OpenClaw's versatility. Each skill is a portable package that teaches the agent how to do something new. There are skills for developer tools - GitHub PR management, CI/CD monitoring, code review workflows. Skills for productivity - Notion, Obsidian, Apple Notes integration. Skills for smart home control - Philips Hue, Home Assistant. Skills for communication - email drafting, social media scheduling. When the agent completes a complex task, it can write a new skill from what it learned, making it available for future use and shareable with the community.
GitHub, CI/CD, Code Review
Manage pull requests, monitor CI pipelines, run automated code reviews. Deploy to staging with a Slack message. Get build failure alerts in Telegram. The agent becomes part of your development workflow.
Notion, Obsidian, Notes
Create and search notes across your knowledge base. Save research directly to Obsidian. Query your Notion database from WhatsApp. Capture ideas on the go and have them organized by morning.
Philips Hue, Home Assistant
Control lights, thermostats, and sensors by messaging your agent. Set up automations: dim the lights when a movie starts, flash the office lights when a deploy finishes, adjust temperature before you arrive home.
Email, Social, Scheduling
Draft and send emails. Schedule social media posts. Set up recurring reminders and reports. The agent becomes your communication hub - one inbox to reach them all, one agent to orchestrate them.
Everything runs on your machine. You own your data, your keys, and your agent.
OpenClaw is fundamentally different from cloud-hosted AI assistants. Your conversations, preferences, and memory are all stored locally as Markdown files you can read, edit, and back up. No vendor cloud ever sees your data. You bring your own API keys - you control which models get called, how much you spend, and what data leaves your machine. You can use local models via Ollama for complete air-gapped privacy. The code is open source: inspect every line, customize anything, contribute back.
Data Stays Home
Conversations and memory stored as plain Markdown on your disk. Readable, editable, back-up-able. No cloud database. No vendor lock-in.
You Control Access
Bring your own API keys. Choose which models process which requests. Use local models via Ollama for zero-data-leaving-your-network privacy.
Inspect Everything
Every line of code is public. Customize behavior, fix bugs, add features. No black boxes. No "trust us." You can read exactly what your agent does.
